PGA Tour Moves from West Coast to East Coast

After a long stint on the West Coast to kick off the New Year in professional golf, the PGA Tour finally made its way back to the East Coast to take in a little Florida sun.

The first tournament held in the Sunshine State, The Honda Classic, was the first PGA Tour event held east of the Mississippi since the pros broke for the holidays following the Franklin Templeton Shootout in Naples. A favorite stop for golf legends on the PGA Tour, the Honda Classic marked a welcome change of scenery that only Palm Beach, Florida can deliver.

The last few weeks have seen some great performances showcasing the West Coast from Scottsdale to Kapalua. Let’s take a look at the Pacific play-by-play to recap some of the highlights leading into the 2015 Florida circuit.

2015 West Coast PGA Tour Highlights

The last few weeks have seen some great performances showcasing the West Coast from Scottsdale to Kapalua. Let’s take a look at the Pacific play-by-play to recap some of the highlights leading into the 2015 Florida circuit.

  • Walker Takes Sony Open: Jimmy Walker obviously didn’t let his loss to Patrick Reed the previous week bother him, considering he went on to post a phenomenal 23-under par to take the win at the 2015 Sony Open in Hawaii, besting 2nd place finisher Scott Piercy by nine strokes for the tournament.
  • Humana Challenge Welcomes Haas: Bill Haas finished 1st in the event, besting five other golf pros by a single stroke after coming off a short medical leave intended to rest his left wrist after a fracture set him back in April of last year.
  • Waste Management Phoenix Open: This year’s Phoenix Open marked an unfortunate turn of events for the Big Cat, with excitement over Tiger Woods’ first showing at the tournament in over a decade quickly shifting to disappointment after the legendary golfer posted a career-worst during Friday’s round of 82.
  • AT&T Pebble Beach National Pro-Am: Bill Murray, Wayne Gretzky and Michael Bolton were just a few of the names headlining the list of celebrities teeing off at the 2015 AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am, playing alongside golf pros Brandt Snedeker, Jim Furyk and Jordan Spieth. Even Larry the Cable Guy got in on the action. Missed that? Check out detailed analysis of the comedian’s swing.
  • A New Face Triumphs at the Northern Trust Open: While most eyes were on Dustin Johnson as he made a run at the No. 1 spot during the Riviera event, it was a fresh face that went on to take the win – James Hahn. Hahn was ranked 297th in the world at the start of the tournament, so it comes as no surprise – to spectators as well as Hahn himself – that while his win was well-deserved, it was still unexpected.

East Coast Line-up

After taking a break from the West Coast, the PGA Tour opened its East Coast line-up with The Honda Classic, held in Palm Beach Gardens, Florida.

  • Harrington takes The Honda Classic: In what was a rain-drenched tournament that ended mid-day on Monday, rookie Daniel Berger and Padraig Harrington dueled for the title in a playoff, with Harrington winning on the 2nd playoff hole. The Honda produced some crazy events, including a triple-bogey by Ian Poulter on his final round to cost him a chance at the title. Pair that with Rory McIlroy missing the cut by 6 strokes and an uproar by Tour caddies claiming they were not taken care of properly after inclement weather hit and you have a very interesting start to this East coast swing.

Three more events in Florida – the World Golf Championships, Valspar Championship and the Arnold Palmer Invitational, along with a stop a little further south at the Puerto Rico Open – will cover most of March before the PGA Tour makes its way back toward the land of the setting sun for the Valero Texas Open.

Soak it in – the Masters is barely more than a month away…
