Callaway Chrome Soft Golf Balls – New for 2015
Going soft doesn’t have to be a bad thing. At least that’s Callaway Golf’s take on their latest contribution to the world of golf: The Chrome Soft. Callaway’s new golf ball is a sharp dogleg from the direction that many golf ball makers have been heading for the last several years.
That’s because most of the chatter coming from professional golf camps, commentators, and clubhouses has been about one thing, distance. Every pro wants distance, every amateur obsesses over distance, but unfortunately fixation on long drives isn’t always a good thing.
Callaway Golf has taken note, and just like campaigns to revolutionize the way that drivers, irons, and other golf equipment performs, the new Chrome Soft promises to change the way that golfers – both professional and amateur – approach their game.
Feel and Control Wins the Hole
For years on end, the general rule has always been that a lower compression ball was suited for a slower swing speed, like that indicative of a junior golfer or senior player. The higher the golf ball compression rating, the faster a player’s swing needed to be to get optimal performance from the golf ball.
But according to Senior Director of Golf Ball R&D Dave Bartels, that’s no longer the case. “The firmer feeling golf balls have become the benchmark for distance and all-around tour-level performance,” stated Callaway Golf’s senior director of golf ball R&D. “But most golfers would agree that soft balls feel better.”
Bartels also went on to state that it’s been no secret in years past that softer golf balls have come at a penalty to golf ball performance. So how has Callaway improved the latest good-feel golf ball, and can it be a beneficial tool to carry in your golf bag?
The Specs
The Callaway Chrome Soft is indicative of the direction that the reputable golf ball producer is headed: toward better feel and control through lower compression ratings.
This comes as no surprise to people familiar with the golf supply and equipment industry, as most trends tend to be cyclical. For far too long, many golf ball makers have focused on distance and speed, while leaving little room for anything else. That approach was great for Tour pros that are garnering ultimate control and precision of their golf game, but what about the rest of us?
Most intermediate golfers and mid to high-level handicappers lose strokes from short distances and around the green, not from sacrificing a few yards off the tee. That’s why golf ball feel is so important. But what if an intermediate golfer could have the best of both worlds—both distance and control? That’s the claim that the new Chrome Soft is boasting.
The Callaway Chrome Soft golf ball features a multilayer cover that is comprised of an outer layer of urethane, giving the ball an ultra-soft feel off the club face. In fact, according to Dave Bartels, this is the softest cover that Callaway has developed yet. With the golf ball’s compression rating being 65, we’re certainly not going to argue.
Bartels also went on to explain how the SoftFast® core of the Chrome Soft compresses at impact just before retaining its own energy, restoring it and using it to generate a faster ball speed. Callaway’s attention to detail in the development of this particular golf ball is simply astonishing.
Final Take
The Callaway Chrome Soft golf ball is destined to change the landscape of the golf ball industry. Where most golf ball manufacturers have focused on producing golf balls with compression ratings averaging in the 80’s and 90’s, Callaway has decided to go in an alternate direction, bringing the importance of feel and short-game control back to into the discussion.
